Like Gideon asking God for confirmation, I too, was asking God whether it was the right time to start our Spiritual Formation Ministry in the San Francisco Bay Area. That happened on the night of April 6, 2017 while visiting Mimi Yeh in Taiwan. We just ended a conference call at 1:00am with the planning team and I was feeling discouraged because: First, we may need to buy a house in the Bay Area.
Second, we did not have sufficient reserve fund. Third, houses are so expensive in the Bay Area. How were we going to buy a house? God, are you sure that this is the right time? If so, you have to show me and make known to us you are with us!
Since the beginning of 2016, we have been seriously planning, talking and anticipating to start our Spiritual Formation Ministry in September of this year. Yet, as time drew near, I became nervous and fearful. On April 6th, I checked WhatsApp right before I went to bed at 2:00am in Taiwan and saw a text message saying that a donor was willing to loan money with low interest rate for us to buy a house! I was speechless and in awe of how powerful and loving God is. God answered my prayer, calmed my heart, and showed me that nothing is impossible for Him!
God did not just give me one confirmation, he gave a second one as well. After FiCF’s first Spiritual Formation Retreat on April 22nd, I was prepared to start looking for a house in May and thought it would take a few months to find a suitable place. However, on April 23rd, a sister who attended the retreat sent me an email with links to two houses in Hayward that were on the market. Thus, we started the house searching process sooner than my plan. The first house I visited seemed to fit our needs and with a backyard overlooking a park. The surrounding is serene and suitable for a retreat site. Plus, the listing price was within our range.
We put in our offer for purchase on May 1st. Our offer was declined on May 3rd. We were all a little disappointed but our hearts were peaceful, trusting that God would give us the best place. On May 5th, we were contacted by the selling agent who told us that the other buyer whose offer was chosen decided not to go through with the purchase. We were given a counter offer to purchase the house with the listing price of $875,000! If all inspections go well, FiCF shall own the house on June 6th.
God knows our hearts, our needs and our worries. As we seek to honor God and do His will, He will lead and guide our works. Indeed, God’s hand is in this ministry! We have experienced God’s wonders in Cambodia ministries, and I believe that we will continue to experience God’s wonders in U.S. ministries as well.
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Eph 3:20-21)
With pledge donations, we still need $700,000 to cover the purchase price and improvement of the house, plus furniture cost. We’ll need another $100,000 for our annual budget of the ministry in the coming year. Our total need is $800,000. We covet your prayers and financial support.
